Southampton legend Mick Channon has been reflecting on the FA Cup win that he said "totally changed the city" 50 years ago.

The former forward and England international was part of the side that lifted what remains Saints' only ever major trophy.

Southampton beat Manchester United 1-0 on 1 May 1976, thanks to Bobby Stokes' second-half winner.

"The FA Cup had always been the thing that stirred the blood for me," Channon told BBC Radio Solent.

"Fifty years has absolutely flown by, the day we won the FA Cup and came back to Southampton the whole city totally changed.

"It was a great day for the city and I'll remember that for the rest of my life as well as the turn-up of Southampton people.

"That day changed our lives, Wembley was a great occasion and a great day out."

Southampton paid tribute to their FA Cup win this season with a commemorative shirt to mark the milestone.

The yellow and blue kit was a modern remake of the one worn in the cup final and was designed in collaboration with some of the players from the 1976 squad.

Saints' extraordinary run in this year's FA Cup then saw them wear it in every round, with wins against Doncaster, Leicester, Fulham, Arsenal and then the semi-final against Manchester City.
