Exeter City interim manager Matt Taylor says his players are "giving everything" to try and secure their League One status.

Exeter's 1-1 draw at Burton Albion, coupled with AFC Wimbledon’s 1-0 win at Wigan Athletic means the Grecians are still two points from safety going into the final game of the season.

Exeter need a win in their last game at home to fifth-placed Bradford City and hope Leyton Orient fail to beat Burton to stay up.

"If we can't get up for that then there's something wrong," Taylor told BBC Radio Devon.

"That's football, that's professional football, this is our situation, we have to find a way of building towards it and build up throughout the week, like we did this week.

"We built towards a performance, built towards a first-half showing, built towards that first goal and we're going to do exactly the same again.

"Of course we need results elsewhere to be going our way, but in terms of the way the lads are giving everything, we might be a little bit short in certain areas of the pitch but the lads are giving everything."

Exeter have won just once in their past 19 games – a run that has seen the Grecians drop from 10th place – and six points off the League One play-offs – to being favourites for the final relegation place.

Taylor has seen his side go unbeaten in their past four games – but they have drawn three of them, along with a 3-0 win over Doncaster Rovers that was their first win since 24 January.

The former Exeter boss returned to the financially-troubled club at the start of last month after Gary Caldwell left St James park to take over at Wigan Athletic.

Taylor, who guided the Grecians to promotion from League Two in 2022, hopes he can lead his side to a crucial victory next week:

"We have to guide some of the ones who've never been in this situation before and some who are experiencing new feelings as a footballer," he said.

"I love working with players and I love building towards something like we did today.

"My job right now from when I get home tonight is to build towards next weekend."
