Cambridge United's promotion-winning captain Michael Morrison is leaving the club, ending his 21-year association with the U's.

The 38-year-old began his career with Cambridge, coming through the academy and making his debut as a 17-year-old in October 2005 when the club was then in the fifth tier.

He went on to make 115 appearances in his before moving to Leicester City, where he won promotion from League One in 2008-09.

A spell at Sheffield Wednesday followed before a three-and-a-half season stint with Charlton Athletic, where he again won promotion into the Championship in 2011-12.

Morrison had further moves to Birmingham City, Reading and Portsmouth, returning to Cambridge in January 2023.

Although relegated with the U's to League Two last season, he featured 17 times this term as the club, leading the promotion celebrations as their final-day draw against Crewe sealing third spot and a place back in the third tier.

The club also announced long-serving winger James Brophy is leaving after five seasons and 259 games.

"I want to thank Michael Morrison and James Brophy for their considerable contributions, having represented us over 500 times between them," director of football Mark Bonner said.

"James has been an almost ever present in the team over the past five seasons, and Michael's story in the club from academy player to club captain and lifting the trophy last week was a fitting and well-deserved end.

"He's been a true servant and proud story in our history."

Elias Kachunga is also departing, after making 112 appearances in three seasons, as are Korey Smith, Shayne Lavery, Shane McLoughlin, Ben Purrington and Harry Dawson.
