The Denver Broncos are re-signing one starting linebacker and releasing another Monday.
Alex Singleton is returning to the Broncos on a two-year contract, according to multiple reports, while Dre Greenlaw is being released one year after signing a three-year, $31.5 million contract, according to NFL Network.
The Broncos and Singleton agreed to a two-year contract worth $15.5 million that includes $11 million guaranteed, according to multiple reports. The news was first reported by DNVR Sports.
Singleton follows Justin Strnad as Broncos linebackers agreeing to deals to return to the team. Strnad agreed to a three-year, $18 million contract that includes $10 million guaranteed, a source told ESPN on Sunday, confirming multiple reports.
Greenlaw, 28, finished his lone season with the Broncos with 43 tackles and an interception and forced fumble in eight games. He also had 10 tackles in two playoff games. Releasing him will result in just over $4 million in salary cap savings and a $6.33 million dead cap charge. If he's designated as a post-June 1 release, the salary cap savings would be $6.2 million.
There wasn't much fanfare when the Broncos signed Singleton in free agency in 2022. At the time he had been described as a high-value special teams player in Philadelphia who had worked his way into the defensive rotation to lead the Eagles in tackles in back-to-back seasons.
The Broncos hoped he would upgrade their special teams and perhaps, if things went right, he could find a way into their defense as well. All he's done since is lead the team in tackles in three of his four seasons in Denver, come back from an ACL tear in '24 to have what he said he considers his best season in 2025, a 135-tackle campaign which included him playing just weeks after surgery for testicular cancer.
Singleton, 32, has 768 tackles during his seven NFL seasons.
The Broncos signed Greenlaw with the hope he would add some physicality to a defense that had some difficulty limiting opponents' explosive runs in the 2024 season. But he missed the offseason program with thigh injuries as well as the Broncos' first six games of the season.
He was also suspended for a game — the Broncos' Oct. 26 win over the Dallas Cowboys — because of a postgame confrontation with referee Brad Allen after the Broncos’ win over the New York Giants. At the time, the NFL said Greenlaw “chased after referee Brad Allen and verbally threatened him as he tried to leave the field.”
