Alessandro Bastoni has become the lightning rod for Italy’s World Cup elimination, and two of Italian football’s most prominent voices have expressed serious concern for the Inter defender’s wellbeing in the aftermath of Wednesday’s defeat, with Beppe Bergomi going as far as suggesting Bastoni may need to leave the country for his own sake.
Speaking on Radio Nerazzurra, the former Inter captain was unambiguous about the toll the public reaction is taking on one of the best defenders in European football.
“What has this boy been put through? He is a friend, I see him at basketball games sometimes, I care deeply about him,” Bergomi began.
