As you guys can see the helicopters, all the owners are leaving here today.
I saw my 22nd and 23rd teams of training camp.
The New England Patriots, who of course play here, we'll get to them in a little bit, and the Philadelphia Eagles, who are here for a 2nd day of joint practices, generally things get a little bit heated during 2nd days of joint practice, which is why a lot of teams don't do that.
We had a little bit of that today.
A couple of the Eagles linemen did not like the way that the Patriots hit Saquan Barkley, so there were a couple of quick dustups there, but for the most part.
I think both teams got a lot of good work done, and these are two very good football teams, of course.
One, the Super Bowl champion from 2 years ago, and then the other one, the AFC champion from last year.
We got 5 takeaways on the Eagles today.
Takeaway number 1, it's very clear that Jalen Hurts is pretty self-aware about everything that's transpired over the course of the last couple of years.
Never was it going to be thrown more in his face than here in New England where AJ Brown, his former number 1 receiver, was traded.
You know, when you talk to people.
In the Eagles organization about it.
What you're hearing is that he's being more intentional now about relationship building, and that's something that really has permeated through the team.
And just talking to a couple of guys about the makeup of the team, they say on a trip like this, you start to really see it, where the team's coming together, and there has been that intention to build strong bonds between the team.
It's an intangible thing, but it's something that's noticeable for the people here.
As for Jalen Hurts going into his first year playing in Sean Mannion's offense, it's a very different offense than what he's used to.
He'll be under center.
The hope is that it reignites the run game and makes things easier and faster for Jalen Hurts in the pass game.
It does require a certain level of precision and it'll be interesting to see how Hurts fits into it in that regard.
Takeaway number 2, as for AJ Brown, the Eagles are, of course, replacing AJ Brown.
There's one name in particular that kept coming up today for me, and that was Jontavian Wicks, who they traded for from Green Bay.
Of course, he was part of the rotation.
Interestingly enough, the other receiver that left Green Bay, Romeo Dobbs, was here as well.
Those two guys for a year.
were in the rotation with Christian Watson, Jaden Reid.
Always a feeling there that all of those guys had high-end potential.
Really, a lot of their production was going to boil down to opportunity.
Well, he's taken advantage of the opportunity that he's got opposite Devonta Smith in Philadelphia.
The new coordinator, Sean Mamion came from Green Bay, so he's very familiar with Wicks.
So he sees the same great separator, great route runner for a bigger guy, same tough guy, same guy who gives great effort in the run game.
So Jontavion Wicks is probably going to have a very big role in the Eagles.
Offense, and that's great news, of course, as they look to replace a bigger, more physical receiver in Brown.
And then you got other names there, of course, the number one is Devonta Smith, Hollywood Brown, veteran, downfield target, their first round pick, Mikay Lemon, all those guys are in the mix.
Here's a name to just circle.
Darius Cooper, an undrafted free agent from 2025, has had a really, really strong summer, looks fluid, looks tough.
He could wind up being in the mix if he doesn't get caught in the run in the numbers game at his position.
Take away number 3, the The Eagles have always been outstanding and developing talent all over their roster, but really where they're better than everybody else and have been better than everybody else over the years has been on the offensive line.
They of course now are without Jeff Stoutlin.
So how's the development of the offensive line going?
Well, you're seeing some of their young offensive linemen come along.
Tyler Steen's already a starter at right guard, but he's had a really nice summer.
And then two backups, one was a 5th round pick last year.
Another was an undrafted free agent last year.
That's Drew Kendall and Willie Lampkin, guys who got the potential to play.
Both center and guard are competing.
Both those guys have had really strong summers that make the people in Philadelphia believe that there's a future for both guys as Eagles.
Take away number 4, same thing on the defensive line.
They're losing Jalen Phillips.
How do they replace him?
How do they replace the pass rush production?
It's going to be by committee to some degree.
So they bring in Jonathan Gernard from Minnesota.
He's banged up right now, didn't get an opportunity to see him, but some of the younger guys again that they've developed from within are really coming along.
Three in particular, Moro Ojemo, who is Milton Williams' replacement a year.
Ago, he looks like he's coming into his own in his 2nd year as a full-time starter.
Jalex Hunt, very promising athletic edge, looks like he's taking another step.
And then Nolan Smith, who of course has been around a while now, certainly looks like he's in for a big year.
So those 3 guys are going to be part of the equation in replacing Jalen Phillips.
Finally, they do have some starters to replace on defense.
We already mentioned Jalen Phillips being one of them.
Jonathan Gernard is a natural replacement there.
They lose to Kobe Dean, as you guys can see the helicopters, all the owners are leaving here.
Where is it?
So there's a helicopter.
Nkobe Dean off to the Raiders.
They'll replace him with Jihad Campbell, who was their first round pick a year ago.
And then there's Reed Blankenship's spot at strong safety and two guys who've had really nice summers in competing for that job, Marcus Epps and Michael Carter.
So one of those two guys.
Probably winds up being the starter and how things go at that position will be a factor in whether or not the Eagles can maintain the level of defense they've had the last few years under Vic Fangi.
Appreciate you guys coming out.
That's 22 camps in the books.
We'll see you next time, and I think the next time might either be a Patriots check-in or one of the teams in New York.
We'll see you guys then.
