Lionel Messi’sWorld Cup fairytale send-off didn’t come to fruition as his Argentina team were outclassed by Spain in the final. He also missed out on the tournament’s Golden Ball award for the best player at the 2026 World Cup to Spanish midfielder Rodri but the Argentinian veteran has bagged one special award this summer. The 39-year-old magician has secured first place in the Transfermarkt Player of the Tournament vote, ahead of Golden Boot winner Kylian Mbappé and fan favourite Vozinha.

Messi took 36.8 percent of the votes after finishing his sixth and final World Cup as runner-up with eight goals – none of them penalties – and four assists. Argentina's football federation thanked Messi for his commitment, for his 'magic," and 'for giving everything until the very last second'. France's Mbappé (Real Madrid), who with ten goals became the first player to finish a World Cup as top scorer for the second time in-a-row, received 25.6 percent of the votes from TM users.

Vozinha, the goalkeeper currently without a club, made 18 saves for Cape Verde in four matches, ensuring that the World Cup debutants didn't lose any of their four games in 90 minutes – even Argentina needed 120 minutes. The 40-year-old goalkeeper received 8.3 percent of the vote and, despite his age, will be among the big winners in the major World Cup market value update on July 22. In fourth and fifth place were Norway's Erling Haaland (Manchester City) with 8 percent of the vote and England’s Jude Bellingham (Real Madrid) with 5.6 percent.

When it comes to positional votes, Messi led with 41.1 per cent of the votes for forward, Bellingham took 53.5 per cent of the votes for midfielders, Pau Cubarsí won for defenders with 27.5 per cent of the vote, whilst Vozinha took 58.4% of the votes for keepers. The official FIFA awards went to three Spaniards: the world governing body named Rodri (Manchester City) Player of the Tournament , while 19-year-old center-back Pau Cubarsí (Barcelona) was awarded Best Young Player . The Golden Glove for Best Goalkeeper went to Unai Simon (Bilbao), who was only beaten once in eight matches, by Belgium's Charles De Ketelaere (Atalanta) in the quarter-finals.
