Everton agree deal for Championship POTS – Why Hackney could prove to be bargain of the summer

In a summer transfer window where inflated fees for central midfielders are becoming the norm, Everton may have just struck gold. Elliot Anderson is set to move to Manchester City for €135 million, with many other clubs quoting huge fees for the talents in their engine rooms. Nevertheless, the Toffees have agreed a deal with Middlesbrough to sign last season’s Championship Player of the Season Hayden Hackney in a package worth just €28.4m. The fee is set to be €19.1m up front with a further €9.3m in potential add-ons. Boro found themselves in a weak negotiating position due to the fact Hackney’s contract expires next summer.

They would have known for the player to have stayed in the North East and signed a new contract they would have had to have earned promotion to the Premier League. Hackney is simply too good to not be playing in the English top-flight. At 24 years old, he couldn’t wait any longer. Everton have beaten fierce competition to get his signature, with Manchester United, Tottenham and Ipswich among the other Premier Legaue clubs interested. We have been tracking Hackney in the Championship for sometime, and this signing may just prove to be one of the most astute pieces of business this summer.

Hayden Hackney becomes Championship all-time MVP
Last month, Hackney became the most valuable player in the history of the Championship. He saw his market value rise to €32m, beating the previous record of €30m set by Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall when at Leicester in 2023/24 (excluding relegated players who were sold that summer). Middlesbrough actually did very well to even hold on to Hackney last summer – he was close to a big money move to Ipswich, with Premier League clubs also interested at the time. But he stayed, and he was a revelation last season.

It was no surprise the fact that Middlesbrough's form plummeted when he got injured. At the point where he broke down, they looked extremely likely to earn automatic promotion, but dropped right down to the thick of the play-offs without Hackney at the heart of their midfield. He is a midfielder who offers everything: he is a fantastic passer of the ball, can glide past players, and is a goal threat too. He's also has been a consistent selection throughout England's youth ranks. If he can continue his progression, it will only be a matter of time before he get his first England call-up. Exciting times for Everton.
