Torquay United manager Jimmy Ball says the club will not "go crazy financially" should they win promotion back to the National League.

The Gulls travel to Hornchurch in their National League South play-off final on Saturday, with the winners earning a place in the fifth tier.

Third-placed Torquay made the final after beating Dorking Wanderers 4-2 in their semi-final at Plainmoor on Saturday, while second-placed Hornchurch qualified thanks to a 2-0 win over Weston-super-Mare.

Torquay have been in the sixth tier for the past three seasons and are in their second campaign under new ownership having gone into administration more than two years ago.

Ball says it is important that the club does not suffer a similar financial fate once again.

"The most important thing is that this football club will act diligently no matter what we do," he told BBC Radio Devon.

"We won't go crazy financially if we get promoted and we won't do the same if we don't and go chasing things.

"It's very important to everybody that the foundations of this club are rock solid for many years to come and we never find ourselves in the position the club was in over two years ago.

"That is what people are adamant about here and I'm in agreement with that as well.

"You've got to do it diligently and carefully and be good stewards of this football club, and I've got to be a good manager for that for as long as I'm here and I've got to do right by Torquay United football club, so it will be sensible regardless."
