Liverpool have power to stop disaster transfer now

Liverpool can stop a transfer that feels like an absolute disaster. It’s far from too late.

Reports continue to grow that Curtis Jones is to leave Liverpool this summer. The Scouser will enter the final year of his deal and there’s essentially zero talk about him getting a new one.

Never a good sign.

It seems that Liverpool simply don’t see the value in Jones, not for the money he’d want to renew. He’s never held down a regular spot in midfield – his best run of games is coming as a last-resort right-back option.

Teams are now lining up to sign Jones, too. Anfield Watch understands that Manchester City have at least asked about a deal. Newcastle United are the latest club to get involved. Inter tried to get him in January and will return this summer.

There’s incredible interest, then. Teams all want Jones but, for whatever reason, Liverpool don’t appear to.

But the thing is, Jones doesn’t want to leave. All suggestions are that it’s Liverpool pushing for a sale here, not their homegrown talent. Forcing out a local player who is absolutely, 100 percent, unquestionably good enough to play regularly for you is a bizarre move on several levels.

For one, Jones won’t even more for his full value, given he only has one year remaining. Secondly, again, he’s more than good enough to play for Liverpool and he actively wants to.

Those players don’t come along often but Liverpool don’t seem to value it. They’re essentially forcing Jones out of the club, presumably to make a bit of money.

It’s something they will come to regret, though not too late to change course.

Curtis Jones: Situation Summary

Liverpool Performance and Stats

As of 5 May 2026, Curtis Jones continues to serve as a tactical “utility man” for Arne Slot, notably filling in at right-back during Liverpool’s defensive injury crisis. The 25-year-old has made 45 appearances this season, logging 2,582 minutes and contributing two goals and two assists. He played the full 90 minutes in a midfield role during the recent 3–2 defeat to Manchester United on 3 May, following a strong performance against Crystal Palace where he provided an assist. Despite his versatility, he has only started 15 Premier League matches, maintaining an average FotMob rating of 6.89 and a pass completion rate of 90.7%.

Transfer Speculation and Contract Status

Jones’ future at Anfield is increasingly uncertain as he enters the final year of his contract. Reports from 1 May indicate that extension talks have "stalled," with Liverpool reportedly entering advanced talks for Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton as a potential replacement. Newcastle United and Aston Villa have recently joined the race for his signature, while Inter Milan remain long-term admirers. Liverpool are expected to consider bids around £30–40 million this summer to avoid a free transfer exit in 2027.

International Standing

Jones appears to be an outsider for Thomas Tuchel’s England squad. Having not featured for the Three Lions since last summer, he was omitted from the March international camp. Analysts suggest his lack of a consistent starting role at club level has hampered his chances for the 2026 World Cup this June.
