That is the key tension. A free transfer is never truly free. Wages, dressing room hierarchy and squad harmony all matter. Coventry cannot afford to distort the culture that powered them back into the Premier League.
Still, ambition has a cost. Lampard will know that sentiment alone will not keep Coventry up.

Barkley’s pedigree remains significant. He has 33 England caps and was once described as having the “potential to be world-class” by Roberto Martinez. David Unsworth also suggested he could become an “all-time great” at Everton.
