Exeter City interim manager Matt Taylor says goalkeeper Jack Bycroft's performances have been an excellent example to his team-mates.

The 24-year-old goalkeeper had not featured in a League One game all season until first-choice Joe Whitworth suffered a season-ending leg injury in the warm-up before the 0-0 draw with Leyton Orient last month.

The former Swindon Town goalkeeper, who moved to Exeter on a free transfer last summer, had been limited to four games in the Vertu Trophy before his late call-up.

But he has gone on to impress, keeping two clean sheets in his four appearances, during which time struggling Exeter have earned five points.

"I think I said after his debut that the biggest compliment I could give Jack and Kev Miller (Exeter City goalkeeping coach) was that he was ready, ready for that moment," Taylor told BBC Radio Devon.

"That's due to his training and his training has been all season long because he's barely featured on the pitch.

"A lot of other players need to follow that lead and follow suit in relation to that.

"It's so difficult when you're not getting the game time – I've been there as a player and you need your fix of the match at the weekend or the Tuesday night.

"But if you're not getting that opportunity then you have to train hell for leather and really go for it and that's a reflection on what Jack's done this season.

"He's performed well in the games, he's got another three games to perform to another level in.

"But it's not just himself in terms of that defensive unit, I think as a team from front to back we've looked more solid and a little bit more resilient."
