Barcelona veteran hints at summer exit: ‘Won’t be here for much longer’

Wojciech Szczesny has opened up about his future at Barcelona, offering a candid and emotional insight as uncertainty continues to surround his role beyond this season.

The experienced goalkeeper, who is approaching the latter stages of his career, appeared on TV3’s Fan Zone programme where he addressed the growing speculation.

While he stopped short of confirming whether he will remain at the club next season, his words strongly suggested that his time at Barcelona may not extend much further.

With a contract that technically runs until 2027, Szczesny acknowledged the reality of his situation and the natural progression of his career.

“My family and I are very happy. We love being here.

“I know I won’t be here for much longer because I’m getting on a bit, but it’s been a fantastic experience for me and my family.

“We’re very grateful for the time we’ve spent here,” he began.

On UCL heartbreak

The emotional tone of his comments comes shortly after Barcelona’s painful Champions League exit at the hands of Atletico Madrid.

The defeat has clearly left a mark on the squad, and Szczesny was quick to acknowledge both the disappointment and the pride he feels in the team’s efforts.

“It’s a disappointment because we all had the dream of winning this competition this year.

“But as the second-most senior player in the squad, I’m proud of what this team has shown in the competition this year, including our performance at the Metropolitano. Tuesday was incredible.

“We gave it our all. Sometimes, in football, it’s not enough and you have to accept defeat with sportsmanship.”

Optimistic about the project

Despite the setback, Szczesny remains optimistic about Barcelona’s long-term prospects in Europe.

He believes the current squad has the quality and mentality required to eventually lift the Champions League trophy, even if this season ended in frustration.

“I think it depends a lot on the players, but in the end, what we did in both matches wasn’t enough to reach the semi-finals.

“So, however frustrating it is, you have to accept it and move on and fight for La Liga because it’s the only trophy left for us this season.

“I’m sure this team will win the Champions League in the coming years because the talent and attitude of the players we have guarantee a great future for the club.”

Barcelona’s response to the European exit has already begun under Hansi Flick, with the squad given time to reset before the final push in the league campaign.

Szczesny confirmed that the focus within the dressing room is now on finishing the season strongly.

“Of course, Flick was disappointed. He gave us a couple of days off because there are eight days until the next match, and he wanted everyone to rest and make sure we focus on La Liga, and that’s what we’ll do.

“We’ll give it our all to ensure a brilliant end to the season and then we’ll fight for this European trophy in the coming years,” he concluded.
