Instead of building a balanced squad tailored to a specific style, the club has at times pursued marquee signings without fully addressing positional needs or tactical fit.
The result is a roster that can look talented on paper but struggles to function consistently on the pitch. Another key issue has been inconsistency in performance, particularly against both top competition and teams lower in the table. United has shown it can compete in big matches, occasionally delivering impressive results against elite clubs.
However, those performances are often followed by unexpected losses or dropped points in games where they are favored. That inability to maintain a high standard week after week has prevented the team from mounting sustained title challenges.
United has fallen short frequently
Leadership on the field has also been a factor. Over the years, the team has lacked a consistent core capable of setting the tone in difficult moments. While there have been talented individuals, translating that into collective resilience has been a challenge. Winning consistently in modern football requires not just skill, but discipline, accountability, and the ability to manage games effectively-areas where United has frequently fallen short.

United has often appeared reactive rather than proactive, adjusting from game to game instead of imposing a consistent approach. That lack of clarity makes it harder to control matches and sustain momentum over a full season.
Ultimately, the Red Devils‘ struggles come down to a combination of instability, inconsistent planning, and an unclear football identity. Talent alone has not been enough to overcome those issues. Until Manchester United establishes a clear direction-from recruitment to tactics to leadership-the cycle of inconsistency is likely to continue.
