Gattuso and the FIGC have terminated their agreement by mutual consent, a statement confirmed on Friday.

Gattuso replaced Luciano Spalletti in June 2025 and made his debut as the new Azzurri coach in September 2025 with a 5-0 win over Estonia.

The FIGC thanked Gattuso and his staff for the “commitment and passion” they put in over the last nine months and wished them “the best for the continuation of their careers.”

Italy failed to qualify for the World Cup for the third time in a row on Tuesday night, losing the play-off Final against Bosnia and Herzegovina on penalties.

FIGC President Gabriele Gravina also resigned following Italy’s elimination, and so did Delegation Chief Gigi Buffon.

Italy have two friendly games in June, but it’s unlikely they’ll have a new coach by then, given that the new FIGC President will be elected in June 2022.
