BBC Sport's senior football correspondent Sami Mokbel has confirmed that a number six is the top priority for Manchester United in this summer's transfer window.
It is thought that those at the club are leaning towards a player with Premier League experience – although a midfielder from another league cannot be ruled out for certain.
England duo Elliot Anderson and Adam Wharton are among those linked with a move to Old Trafford, along with fellow Premier League stars Sandro Tonali and Carlos Baleba. Elsewhere in Europe, Atalanta's Ederson is believed to have impressed some at the club.
It also cannot be ruled out that United will sign more than one number six, especially if out-of-favour Manuel Ugarte departs this summer.
There are two factors which will prove crucial in the club's decision making – Champions League qualification and who the next permanent manager will be.
