When Christian Norgaard made the move from Brentford to Arsenal in the summer, many described it as smart business. Not glamorous, not particularly exciting, but a savvy signing in the form of an experienced Premier League captain. It was unclear, however, how he might fit into Mikel Arteta’s high-energy, high-intensity outfit.
So far this season, Norgaard was been restricted to just 31 minutes of Premier League action. Many started to question why we had bought him to simply warm the bench.
However, the domestic cups have provided a perfect stage for the Dane to prove his worth, most recently in Arsenal's 4-1 FA Cup win over Portsmouth. His first ‘goal’ for the club – which officially went down as an own goal – wasn’t a pretty one, but he won’t care and neither do we.
Norgaard demonstrated a level of composure in what was quite a frantic FA Cup tie at a lively Fratton Park. His maturity and experience at centre-back helped guide Arsenal back from conceding in the 11th minute to winning comfortably. This came off the back of a similarly astute performance in the Carabao Cup against Crystal Palace.
For a team chasing the title, having a 'plug-and-play' veteran who can allow the starting XI to rest without a drop in standards is essential. The more Norgaard plays, the more Arteta appears to trust him to get the job done without having to bring on Declan Rice or Martin Zubimendi. With Arsenal still involved in all four competitions, this is priceless.
Beyond his ability on the pitch, Norgaard endeared himself to the Arsenal faithful early on. Upon signing, he was in tears after seeing his young son in an Arsenal kit for the first time.
This show of emotion highlighted a deep appreciation for the club and if he continues to honestly ply his trade as he is currently doing, he could become an unlikely legend at the club.
