Supporters across England will rejoice with the end of a relatively pointless international break as attention switches back to the closing stages of the club season. It’s another week until the Premier League returns as its FA Cup quarter-final weekend and the biggest tie is unquestionably Liverpool’s trip to Manchester City on Saturday lunchtime. Two of the biggest clubs in the world will lock horns in a bid to reach Wembley and they will renew their recent rivalry.

This decade, Liverpool and City have been the dominant forces in English football with Pep Guardiola and Jürgen Klopp going head-to-head. The battles between the two sides were always incredibly entertaining and the last Premier League titles were one by either Liverpool (2) or Man City (6), while they’ve both won the Champions League since 2000. Numerous superstars have lit up this fixture in recent years and we’ve assembled a combined XI of current players based on the highest transfer fees paid.

Man City vs Liverpool: Combined XI based on transfer fees

Six Liverpool stars and five Man City players feature in the combined XI, with the total transfer fees for all 11 players standing at €912 million. The two most expensive signings in Premier League history were made this summer by Liverpool; €145m for Alexander Isak and €125m for Florian Wirtz. Isak is joined in a front three with two Man City attackers – Omar Marmoush and Antoine Semenyo. Wirtz is deployed as an attacking midfielder behind two of the Premier League’s best midfielders, Dominik Szoboszlai and Rodri.

Szoboszlai joined the Reds from RB Leipzig for €50m in 2023 while Rodri famously won the Ballon d’Or at City after signing from Atletico Madrid for €70m in 2019. Josko Gvardiol is the most expensive centre-back in history at €90m, while Virgil van Dijk ranks fourth at €85m. Milos Kerkez and Mathues Nunes are the two full-backs with Alisson the second most expensive goalkeeper in history.
