Dundalk 2 – 2 Derry City FT

Derry City's wait for a win goes on as they played out a 2-2 draw with Dundalk in difficult conditions at Oriel Park.

The Candystripes were pegged back on two occasions by their in-form hosts.

A wonderful strike from Dundalk's Tyreke Wilson cancelled out James Clarke's early opener.

Dipo Akinyemi restored Derry's lead before the break but Ronan Teehan's second half header ensured a much deserved share of the spoils for the Lilywhites.

The Foylesiders finished the game with 10 men as substitute James McClean received two yellow cards in quick succession in stoppage time.

A point means Derry stay seventh without a win in seven games and are now just three points above the relegation play-off place following Sligo Rovers' victory.

Pressure mounts on Lynch as Derry toil

In-form Dundalk recorded successive wins over the Easter weekend and they threatened to take an early lead against Derry.

Gbemi Arubi threaded the ball through for Declan McDaid, but he fired straight at Eddie Beach in the City goal.

Despite having just opened the scoring once all season, it was Tiernan Lynch's side who hit the front.

Ben Doherty slid the ball across and Clarke stabbed home inside a quarter of an hour for just Derry's third first-half goal of the campaign.

Mayowa Animasahun almost equalised for the Lilywhites, but his header was superbly tipped over the crossbar by Beach.

The leveller did come on 35 minutes when Wilson smashed in on the half-volley from range.

Derry, though, restored their lead in first-half stoppage time when Doherty's rebound from his initial free-kick was diverted past the wrong-footed Enda Minnogue by Akinyemi.

Dundalk had taken 13 points from the last 15 on offer and laid siege on the Derry goal in the second half in pursuit of an equaliser.

Eoin Kenny's effort was charged down by Candystripes centre-back Jamie Stott and moments later Beach spread himself brilliantly to thwart the unmarked Harvery Warren from close range.

John Ross Wilson blazed over from seven yards when he should have done better while Teehan's attempt from the edge of the box was dealt with sharpy by the impressive Beach.

On the counter, City substitute Josh Thomas showed tremendous pace down the right, cut inside, but, from an acute angle, his left-footed shot went the wrong side of the post.

The home side eventually made it 2-2 on 79 minutes when Teehan's downward header evaded Beach.

Kenny then struck the post as Dundalk went closest to snatching all three points.

In the 92nd minute McClean saw the first of his two yellow cards and he was soon sent off for another late challenge.

Despite a spirited performance, Derry's winless run continues with Shelbourne away up next.
