Cristiano Ronaldo‘s future at Al Nassr could soon be over, as the 40-year-old star reportedly sat out a recent Saudi Pro League match in protest of how the club is being run, a move that could ultimately push him toward Major League Soccer (MLS) or a return to Europe.
The unprecedented standoff has exposed deeper tensions between Ronaldo and Saudi Arabia‘s Public Investment Fund (PIF), which owns multiple top clubs in the kingdom, and has raised questions about where one of soccer’s greatest-ever players might continue his career.
The situation reached a boiling point when Ronaldo did not feature in Al Nassr‘s 10 league victory over Al Riyadh, a decision initially framed as a possible tactical rest but quickly recast by reporters as a protest.
According to Portuguese outlet A Bola, the absence was “not related to any physical issue nor to workload or fitness management.”
Instead, Ronaldo is understood to be unhappy with how Al Nassr has been handled, particularly compared to club rivals who share the same PIF ownership.
Ronaldo‘s frustration centers on perceived inequality in investment and squad strengthening.
While PIF-backed teams such as Al Hilal, Al Ittihad, and Al Ahli have been able to augment their rosters with high profile signings, Al Nassr‘s transfer activity has been comparatively modest.
One telling example cited by multiple reports was the move of Karim Benzema to Al Hilal, which, according to sources, was among the catalysts for Ronaldo‘s displeasure.
For a player who has galvanized interest in Saudi football since his 2023 arrival and remains one of the sport’s most marketable figures, the dispute has become deeply personal.
Ronaldo also accepted a role as an ambassador for the 2034 FIFA World Cup in Saudi Arabia, a position that added to his belief that his contributions have helped elevate the league’s global standing.
Yet those efforts, some insiders say, have not been met with the recognition or support he expected from the club's hierarchy.
While Ronaldo‘s contract with Al Nassr runs until mid-2027 and includes a substantial release clause of around 50 million, there is growing speculation that he could trigger that provision and look for greener pastures this summer.
Record, the Portuguese sports newspaper, reported that MLS and a return to European competition are among the destinations under consideration as Ronaldo approaches his 41st birthday.
The dispute could reshape Ronaldo‘s legacy
If Ronaldo were to make the leap to MLS, it would thrust the league further into the global spotlight, potentially setting up marquee showdowns with stars like Lionel Messi, who has already elevated the profile of football in the United States since his move to Inter Miami.
Although Ronaldo has previously spoken favorably about the Saudi Pro League‘s competitive level compared to MLS, the evolving dynamics at Al Nassr have clearly changed the conversation.
