Sassuolo winger Berardi and Genoa midfielder Ellertsson were sent off after the first half of today’s Serie A match between the Grifone and the Neroverdi at the Stadio Ferraris.
Genoa were leading 1-0 at the break, but their defender Stefano Sabelli was seen arguing with Berardi inside the tunnel because of a challenge in the dying minutes of the first half.
Sabelli’s comments irritated Berardi, who hit back angrily, escalating the physical clash that also involved Genoa’s Johan Vásquez and Ellertsson.
The latter and Berardi paid the highest price for their involvement in the dispute, as referee Antonio Rapuano gave both a straight red card.
Ukraine international Ruslan Malinovskyi had given Genoa the lead with a stunning goal from distance in the first half, and the match resumed after the break with both sides reduced to ten men.
