It is not being an easy season for Alejandro Garnacho. He left Manchester United through the back door last summer and in his first season at Chelsea he is having problems to shine with his football. In a conversation with Sky Sports, the Argentine confessed his regret at the way his love affair with Old Trafford ended.
"The last six months I was not playing as before at Manchester United. I started to stay on the bench; it’s not so bad, I was only 20 years old, but in my head I should always play," he said. "In my mind maybe it's also my fault, I started to do some bad things. But yes, it was just a moment in life and sometimes you have to make decisions, and I’m very proud to be here and still in the Premier League at a club like this,” he said, referring to Chelsea. This season, he has one goal and four assists in the English competition after the Blues paid a significant amount ($54 million) for him.
"We know the squad we have and what we can do. Sometimes there are good moments and sometimes there are bad moments. I'm proud to be here now; my life is normal and I'm happy. I have nothing bad to say about United, neither about the club nor about any team-mate. It was just a change of stage in my life. My life went on. You have to look forward," he said
However, Garnacho admitted that it hurt him to leave Manchester United after his disagreements with Ruben Amorim and starring in several controversies over his usual substitution under the Portuguese coach. “Yes, maybe, because I loved the club. From Spain they trusted me, they took me to the youth academy and then to the first team. It was four or five incredible years, with a lot of affection from the fans and the stadium. But sometimes you have to change for the good of your life or to take the next step. I only have good memories of Manchester United," he said.
Goodbye to the World Cup with Argentina?
His lack of prominence with Liam Rosenior in Chelsea’s rotation has left him in a difficult situation ahead of the World Cup. Scaloni has the final say, but right now he is unlikely to be in the final squad. Garnacho had the option to choose to play for Spain, but he preferred the Albiceleste. "I chose Argentina because they gave me the confidence from the beginning that I would be important for the future. Playing with Messi is an opportunity that you can't easily say no to," he explained. “It was a dream. I was with him for a week, eating, training and living together every day. I even asked him for a picture.”
