João Gomes is on the verge of completing his move to Aston Villa from Wolves. The Brazilian international will depart Wolves’ training camp in Portugal to complete the formalities around the deal, as first reported by BirminghamLive. It’s understood that Villa will pay an initial €40m for Gomes with a potential €5m in add-ons after negotiations were completed swiftly. It was widely believed that the 25-year-old would join Atlético Madrid this summer but a deal fell through earlier in the window.

Gomes began pre-season preparations with Wolves but he was always destined to depart after their relegation to the English Championship. The talented midfielder joined Wolves from his boyhood club Flamengo for €18.7m in 2023 and made 130 appearances for the club with the Molenieux club set to earn a substantial profit. Aston Villa are determined to reinforce their central midfield options this summer after Youri Tieleman’s move to Manchester United and Amadou Onana’s long-term injury with Gomes to rank amongst their record signings.
Aston Villa club record signings
Interestingly, the €40m initial fee that Aston Villa will pay Wolves is exactly the same as his current market value. There’s also add-ons included in the deal based on performance milestones but the initial fee will make the midfielder Aston Villa’s fourth most expensive signing in history. As the graphic below illustrates, Gomes could rise to third if his add-ons are met to take the deal to €45m.
Villa’s record signing remains Amadou Onana’s €59.4m arrival from Everton in 2024 but that’s set to be smashed this summer. Unai Emery’s men are on the verge of completing a deal to sign Johan Manzambi from Freiburg for an initial fee of €60m. Manzambi was one of the breakthrough stars of the World Cup with Switzerland and his arrival will push Gomes down Villa’s top signings list.
