Manchester United have announced their desired location for their new 100,000-seater stadium to replace Old Trafford. In an official statement outlining their intentions, United have revealed their ambitious plans to build the stadium 350 metres away from their iconic current home. The English giants still need to realistically be able to fund the development but they claim their plans to build a new ‘stadium district’ will create 48,000 local jobs, 15,000 new homes and potentially bring €8.6 billion-per-annum into the UK economy.

Colette Roche, CEO of the New Stadium Development at Manchester United, stated: “The publication of the Wharfside Masterplan marks another significant milestone in our journey to create a new world-class home for Manchester United at the heart of a vibrant and transformational district for Trafford and Greater Manchester.” Old Trafford is the biggest club stadium in England, and second behind Wembley but where will the new venue rank amongst the highest capacity arenas in Europe? Let’s find out!
The biggest capacity stadiums in Europe
United’s planned new home will become the largest capacity stadium across Europe, which is currently in use. The 100,000 capacity venue will dwarf their domestic rivals in England with Tottenham’s stadium ranking second at 62, 850. Old Trafford currently holds 74,878 supporters and the club are understood to be confident that there’s enough demand for a much bigger stadium.
As the graphic above illustrates, Barcelona’s Camp Nou will boast an attendance of 99,354 when it’s fully completed. There have been contrary reports on the final capacity, with initial reports stating it would be close to 105,000 but this is the figure quoted on Barcelona’s official website. Wembley ranks third overall, while Real Madrid’s Santiago Bernabeu (85,454) and Borussia Dortmund’s (81,365) complete the top five.
