Mexico boast crazy Azteca record – where does it rank among best World Cup unbeaten runs?

Just three teams went through the 2026 World Cup group stages with a 100% win record. Tournament favourites France, Lionel Messi’sArgentina and co-hosts Mexico. The North American nation were the only one of those sides to win all three of their matches without conceding a single goal. Each of their group fixtures were played at the iconic Estadio Azteca in Mexico City in front of a raucous home crowd. It is the third World Cup in which Mexico has hosted matches after the 1970 World Cup and the 1986 World Cup – where they stepped in for Colombia who had financial issues.
Mexico have now played nine World Cup matches at the Azteca without losing a single one – five wins and four draws. Up next, Ecuador go to the Mexican capital for their round of 32 clash this Tuesday evening. If Mexico get through they will play either England or DR Congo in the round of 16 at the very same stadium. But where does Mexico’s unbeaten streak rank among the best ever unbeaten records at a specific stadium in World Cup history?
Best records at specific stadiums in World Cup history
As illustrated in the graphic below, no other nation can get near to Mexico's record of nine World Cup matches unbeaten at the Azteca. They played three games there in 1970, four in 1986 and have played three at this summer's tournament – all without tasting defeat. The next best record at a specific stadium is actually Germany at the famous San Siro. As West Germany, they played there once in 1934 and five times at the 1990 World Cup (which they won) and didn’t lose a single one of those games.
On their way to winning the 1966 World Cup on home soil, England went five matches unbeaten at the Old Wembley, whilst Italy went five matches unbeaten at the Stadio Olimpico in 1990, but did lose the semi-final to Argentina in Naples on penalties. Four further teams have managed four games unbeaten at a specific stadium: Uruguay at their Estadio Centenario in 1930, Brazil at the Estadio Sausalito in Chile in 1962, Germany at the Estadio León in 1970 in Mexico and France in their own Stade de France in 1998.
