Man City appoint Enzo Maresca: How €20m fee ranks amongst most expensive managers

Manchester City have completed their first major signing of the summer transfer period, but it isn’t a player for the club’s starting XI next season. Instead, the club have completed negotiations with Chelsea to appoint Enzo Maresca as their next manager and the man tasked with replacing Pep Guardiola. Speaking on his return to City, Maresca said: “Manchester City is a club I know very well and to have the chance to manage this team is a brilliant opportunity for me.City is an incredibly well-run football club. Everything they do is innovative, planned and purposeful. For a manager, that is a dream situation. It provides the consistency I need to do my job effectively.”

A verbal agreement was recently reached between Man City and Chelsea for Maresca’s signature, with the Italian head coach still under contract at Stamford Bridge until 2029 despite quitting in January, when he was replaced by Liam Rosenior. It’s understood that Maresca has signed a three-year contract with the former English champions, but in order to do so, Man City have had to pay compensation to release Maresca from his contract at Chelsea. That fee, apparently, stands at a remarkable €20 million, which is not only a sizable sum for a head coach but is among the highest fees ever paid for one in the history of the sport.
Indeed, according to Transfermarkt information, should Maresca make the move to Man City for the reported fee, he’ll become the third most expensive head coach in history. Only two head coaches cost more than the Italian head coach – Graham Potter (who left Brighton for Chelsea for €25m in 2022) and Julian Nagelsmann (who joined Bayern Munich from RB Leipzig in 2021 for €25m). Maresca would join the list of all-time most expensive head coaches ahead of José Mourinho’s move from Inter Milan to Real Madrid in 2010, which at the time cost the Spanish giants an impressive €16m in compensation. And while the fee is relatively little compared to what Man City are used to paying for players, it still underlines their desire to hire Maresca as the man to succeed Guardiola.
