Torino have warned that fans wearing Juventus merch will not be allowed inside the stadium for Sunday’s Derby della Mole, sparking the Bianconeri’s reaction, which highlighted the right to ‘attend the sporting event in a free and responsible manner.’

An email sent by Torino to ticket buyers for the Derby della Mole has prompted a response from their city rivals, Juventus.

The two Turin-based sides meet at the Stadio Grande Torino on Sunday in the last game of the season.

The Granata have not beaten Juventus in ten years, and the stadium is expected to be sold out for the first time in several months. Granata ultras and many ordinary fans, in fact, had boycotted previous home games to protest against the club’s owner, Urbano Cairo.

As reported by several media outlets, including Tuttosport, Torino reached out to fans who had bought tickets in the ‘Distinti’ and ‘Curva Primavera’ sectors via email, warning that they’d not be allowed to enter the stadium if wearing Juventus merch.

What Torino told fans ahead of Turin derby

Torino stressed that seats in those areas are “strictly reserved for Torino fans and neutral spectators” and that tickets were “sold to the holders of the Cuore Granata membership card or to Torino ticket buyers, with repeated reminders before purchase that this was a section dedicated to Granata supporters.”

The general sale for the Turin Derby began on April 7, with the first phase reserved for season ticket holders who could buy up to an extra four tickets for their friends.

The same were allowed to do, from the end of April, the holders of ‘Cuore Granata’ card and those who had bought at least one ticket for Torino home games this season.

“For obvious safety reasons and to avoid tensions, access will not be permitted to anyone wearing shirts, scarves or other symbols of the visiting team,” Torino continued.

“We therefore ask you to respect this common-sense rule in order to ensure a safe and peaceful environment for everyone.”

Torino’s message triggered a strong reaction from Juventus, who said in astatement: “Juventus express strong concern regarding the communication issued by Torino about access arrangements for the Distinti section ahead of the upcoming match.

“While understanding and sharing the absolute priority for safety inside sports venues, Juventus note that such measures do not appear to be supported by any guidance received by the club from the competent authorities.

“Football, especially a match with strong symbolic and territorial significance, such as a derby, should be an occasion for open sporting rivalry, in which every supporter can experience their passion while respecting the rules and others.

“Juventus therefore trust that, also through institutional dialogue with the relevant authorities, a balance can be ensured between public order requirements and supporters’ right to attend the sporting event in a free and responsible manner.

“The club reiterates its ongoing commitment to promoting the values of respect, inclusion and fair play, both on and off the pitch.”
