Goalkeeper is arguably one of the most difficult positions in football and the requirements differ massively from outfield players. While they generally don’t get the recognition or adulation as attacking players, goalkeepers are constantly in the spotlight and their mistakes are scrutinised the most as they inevitably lead to conceding goals.

The demands on goalkeepers have increased significantly across the last ten years as the elite stoppers must also be incredibly comfortable with their feet. In possession, goalkeepers are entrusted to start attacks and former Manchester City star Ederson is often used as the perfect example to future stars. Currently, Gianluigi Donnarumma is the most valuable stopper in the world on Transfemarkt at €45 million and that’s inspired us to calculate which nation has the most valuable collection of goalkeepers in the world.

The nations with the most valuable collection of goalkeepers

We’ve used Transfermarkt’s renowned market values and combined the valuations of every goalkeeper from that nation to formulate the results. Using our parameters, Spain has the most valuable collection of goalkeepers with 367 players possessing a total value of €282m. It’s perhaps no surprise given the number of quality options that Luis de la Fuente has at his disposal with Barcelona’sJoan García and Arsenal’sDavid Raya amongst the top ten most valuable goalkeepers in the world. Despite that, Unai Simón is De la Fuente’s first-choice for the national team and that decision has raised eyebrows.

Donnarumma is a major factor why Italy occupy second place and they also have the most goalkeepers (534) with a market value on Transfemarkt – due mainly to the vast amount of lower league players in Italy with valuations. The depth of players also explains Germany occupying third spot as they don’t currently have a single player in the top twenty most valuable goalkeepers. Brazil and Argentina are the only non-European nations in the top ten with Japan representing Asia and Mexico for North America.
