Liverpool’s next transfer window is already beginning to look significant. After a title-winning first season under Arne Slot, the challenge has shifted from celebration to refinement. According to Dominic King for The Telegraph, the club are assessing key areas of the squad, with midfield depth and right-wing succession emerging as priorities.
Midfield Concerns Demand Attention
Liverpool’s midfield has functioned well in phases, but the wider picture suggests more security is required. King writes: “There is no doubt that the engine room needs work with doubts persisting over Alexis Mac Allister’s future.”
That line matters. Mac Allister has been central to Liverpool’s technical control, but uncertainty around any elite midfielder forces a proactive recruitment department into motion. Liverpool rarely operate on sentiment alone. They assess profile, age, data, availability and value, then move when the conditions align.
Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton is named as a player who “would have the right profile”. That is easy to understand. He is young, composed, Premier League tested and already an England international. His ability to receive under pressure and move possession quickly would fit Slot’s need for rhythm and control.

Ligue 1 Market Remains Firmly on Liverpool Radar
Liverpool’s recruitment team have long monitored France closely, so the mention of Mamadou Sangare is logical. King reports that “Liverpool’s traditional close scrutiny of Ligue 1 means they will be aware of the well-regarded Mamadou Sangare, a Mali international who plays for Lens.”
Sangare, in profile terms, appears to represent the kind of athletic, progressive midfield option Liverpool may need if they want to restore balance. As King puts it, “A player in that mould is essential.”

Salah Succession Plan Gains Urgency
The right-wing situation is even more pressing. King states: “Salah’s imminent departure is not just opening up a position to strengthen; Arne Slot has wanted pace on the flank all year.”
That is a major point. Replacing Mohamed Salah cannot be reduced to goals alone. Liverpool must consider speed, durability, pressing, decision-making and how the next right-sided forward changes the structure of Slot’s attack.
Antoine Semenyo is mentioned with regret, with King noting “what difference Antoine Semenyo would have made to Liverpool had they pursued him with more vigour.” That feels telling. Semenyo’s direct running and Premier League explosiveness would have offered Liverpool a different weapon.
Diomande Interest Shows Forward Planning
Yan Diomande is another name to watch. King reports that “Yan Diomande, the €100m-rated teenager at RB Leipzig, is being tracked carefully.”
Liverpool have “done due dilligence and spoken to the Ivory Coast international’s advisors”, although the report stresses that “no decision has been made about launching a move, particularly not at that huge valuation.”
That is classic Liverpool process. Interest does not always equal action. At €100m, Diomande would need to be viewed as a generational fit, not simply a talented option.

From a Liverpool fan’s perspective, this feels like the start of a defining summer. Slot delivered the Premier League title in his debut season, which gave him enormous credit, but the current campaign has exposed gaps that cannot be ignored. Sitting fourth after spending £450m last summer is not where supporters expected this side to be.
The midfield issue is fascinating. Mac Allister has quality, intelligence and big-game temperament, so doubts around his future would naturally unsettle fans. If he goes, Liverpool cannot patch that hole with a squad player. They need someone who can shape games. Adam Wharton makes huge sense because he looks like a player built for control, tempo and Premier League intensity.
The Salah point is even bigger. Fans have known this day would come, but knowing it and accepting it are different things. Salah’s output, aura and reliability are almost impossible to replace directly. That is why the profile matters. Pace on the flank has been missing too often, and Semenyo would have been an exciting fit.
Diomande sounds thrilling, but €100m is serious money. Liverpool must be brave, but also precise. The next right winger cannot simply be a statement signing. He has to be the right signing.
