Injured Real Madrid star set for surgery, complicates chances of summer sale

Real Madrid defender Ferland Mendy will undergo surgery in the coming days after suffering a new muscle injury during the match against RCD Espanyol, reports MARCA.

The left-back will be operated on for an injury to the rectus femoris tendon in his right leg.

Another surgery for Mendy

Just over a year ago, Mendy had suffered a similar injury that required him to undergo surgery. It was on 30 April 2025 that Real Madrid announced that Manuel Leyes had operated on the Frenchman for a rupture of the proximal tendon of the rectus femoris in his right quadriceps.

Mendy has barely been able to play since recovering from that operation, and has accumulated 448 minutes on the pitch in the current campaign.

The latest fitness setback – his fifth of the season, will require him to undergo surgery once again.

However, the Frenchman will not have the operation in Spain on this occasion. It is most likely that he will place himself in the hands of the same doctor who recently operated on Eder Militao, Lasse Lempainen.

As a result, the veteran full-back is expected to travel to Finland for the procedure.

Uncertain future

The surgery is set to complicate matters for Mendy and Real Madrid heading into the summer, considering that he was one of the candidates staring at a potential departure.

But now, he is expected to be out for a period of four to five months after surgery, which makes the possibility of a summer sale difficult.

The Frenchman’s current contract with Real Madrid runs until 2028 and it remains to be seen how Real Madrid handle the situation with the player.
