Aston Villa are pushing to sign Real Sociedad goalkeeper Álex Remiro this summer, and Newcastle United have joined the chase, according to Saturday’s edition of Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo, relayed via Sport Witness. The report confirms that Remiro’s release clause has dropped sharply from €50m to €12m, a figure both Premier League clubs can easily afford.

Aston Villa eye Real Sociedad’s Remiro as contract clause opens a summer door

Villa’s interest goes back to last summer, when a deal never happened despite clear intent from Unai Emery’s side. Now, with the 31-year-old’s situation getting more complicated, Aston Villa are described as insistent alongside Eddie Howe’s Newcastle. Barcelona have held several meetings with Remiro’s agent and are looking into a move this summer or a free transfer in 2027, when his contract ends.

Inter Milan have also made contact. Real Sociedad, aware of the threat, have urged Remiro to sign an extension, but the Spaniard is asking for time, specifically waiting to see if Luis de la Fuente will include him in Spain’s 2026 World Cup squad. His league numbers this season show 33 appearances, 82 saves, and just three clean sheets in a tough campaign for his club.

Should Aston Villa genuinely prioritise a goalkeeper who conceded 52 goals this season?

52 goals conceded sounds bad at first, but the situation matters a lot here. Real Sociedad have had a rough La Liga campaign, leaving Remiro exposed far more than most top keepers would put up with. His 82 saves across 33 starts, averaging 2.6 per game, show a goalkeeper working overtime behind a shaky defence.

His passing, footwork, and ability to control the box are still top-quality, which should help in Emery’s tactics of keeping the ball. The worry, though, is age. At 31, Remiro doesn’t give Aston Villa long-term security, and €12m for a short-term solution is a risk if Emiliano Martínez leaves.

Aston Villa need a clear plan for the future, not just a quick solution. That said, if the World Cup talk distracts him and pushes the price down even more, Aston Villa could get a high-quality player for very little money. The move makes sense, but the timing just has to be right.

Aston Villa’s move for Remiro is still one of the smarter bits of summer business they could do, as long as the price stays low.
