Nottingham Forest Open Bailey Rice Talks as Premier League Race Intensifies
Nottingham Forest have entered what could become one of the more intriguing youth transfer battles of the summer, with TeamTalk reporting that Forest, Aston Villa and Crystal Palace are all pushing to sign Rangers midfielder Bailey Rice.
The 19-year-old is out of contract this summer and, according to the report, “is set to leave Rangers this summer upon the expiry of his contract”. That alone makes this a market opportunity. Young, technically gifted midfielders rarely become available without a major transfer fee, and Rice’s situation has understandably alerted clubs across England and Europe.
Rice joined Rangers from Motherwell in 2022 and was viewed as one of Scotland’s most promising young midfielders. TeamTalk describe his move to Ibrox as “a major coup at youth level”, but his senior pathway has not developed as smoothly as expected.

Premier League Pathway Appeals
Rice has made more than a dozen first-team appearances for Rangers, yet the sense from TeamTalk’s report is clear. The player wanted more. Sources indicate that he has “grown frustrated at the lack of consistent opportunities”, with the midfielder not receiving the extended run many felt was needed for his development.
For Forest, this is the type of deal that fits a broader recruitment model. The club have shown ambition, but also need smart squad building. Rice would not arrive as a guaranteed starter, but as a high-upside addition with the technical base to be moulded into a Premier League midfielder.
Villa and Palace will make this difficult. Both clubs can offer strong development environments, while Palace in particular have a proven reputation for giving young players real responsibility.
European Interest Complicates Decision
TeamTalk also report that “Schalke, Stuttgart and Ajax have all held discussions over a potential deal”. That matters. For a player at Rice’s stage, the Premier League may carry prestige, but the continent may offer minutes, coaching and a clearer technical identity.
Ajax would naturally appeal to any young midfielder, while Stuttgart and Schalke can offer exposure to German football’s intensity and structure. Rice now faces a decision that could define his next five years.
Rangers Facing Summer Change
Rice may not be the only significant Rangers departure. TeamTalk also claim James Tavernier is out of contract at the end of the season, with Tottenham and Wolves monitoring his situation.
For Rangers, losing Rice would sting because this is a player once seen as part of the club’s future. For Forest, it may be a chance to strike before his value explodes elsewhere.

From a Nottingham Forest fan’s perspective, this report is fascinating because Bailey Rice feels like exactly the sort of player the club should be targeting. Forest have spent heavily in recent windows, but smart recruitment is not always about the biggest fee. Sometimes it is about identifying talent before the rest of the market fully wakes up.
Rice clearly has pedigree. Rangers do not take a teenager from Motherwell unless they believe there is serious potential there. The concern, of course, is that he has not played enough senior football. That means Forest would be signing promise rather than proof.
Still, that should not be a reason to hesitate. Forest need to build a squad with layers. Not every signing has to arrive as an instant first XI player. Rice could come in, learn the tempo, work under Premier League coaching and develop without carrying the pressure of being a marquee arrival.
Competition from Villa, Palace and Ajax is a warning sign, though. If Forest genuinely want him, they need to show him a pathway. Young players do not want vague promises. They want a plan. If Forest can provide that, this could be one of those low-cost deals that looks very clever in two years.
