Cambridge ready to 'finish the job' – Ball

Midfielder Dom Ball says there will be no hiding place for Cambridge United on Saturday as they look to seal promotion back to League One.

The U's are in a three-way battle with Salford City and Notts County for the third automatic spot, but their fate is in their own hands and a win at Crewe Alexandra will see them up.

Ball has already been promoted three times in his career, once in Scotland with Rangers and twice with Ipswich Town when they went from League One to the Premier League in successive seasons.

"It's a very good season, it's been exciting – and even more exciting now going into the last game," he told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire.

"I don't think you can hide from it. We've worked very hard to get there but we haven't finished the job, and you can sense that with everyone now.

"We've got the opportunity to go and finish the job and that's what we'll be trying to do on Saturday."

Cambridge are one point ahead of Salford and two clear of Notts County, with a vastly superior goal difference.

But they do not want to leave anything to chance and will be looking to repeat their home success against over 10th-placed Crewe in November when Korey Smith and Mamadou Jobe were on target in a 2-1 win.

They are expecting almost 2,500 supporters to make the journey north and in such an atmosphere, Ball will draw on previous experiences to urge his team-mates to stay calm.

"There are some games when we didn't take the (three) points and the fact that with one game to go, we are where we need to be is important and we've got to be at it," he said.

"We've got to give it everything we can in the game and having the fans behind us will push us.

"The squad we've put together here is definitely worthy of being in a higher league, but you still have to make it happen, you still have to perform every single week and for the majority of the team, we've done that."

'In a position of strength'

A 24-match run which saw them beaten only once and included a run of six successive wins was key to their charge into the automatic promotion picture and boss Neil Harris recently stressed the need to continue to play with freedom in their final matches.

"We've got ourselves into a position of strength going into the last weekend of the season, we've come a long way in a short space of time and this is no time to be stepping backwards now, we've got to go full throttle," he said.

"They know what they've done so far is very good, but they also know we've not achieved anything of note yet and they've trained this week with that mindset.

"We've got no fear, we had no expectations at the start of the season and we've made huge strides to get to where we are."

"For me, there's no-one chasing any more, it is just a one game shoot-out, it is almost a play-off final – for us, for Salford and Notts County. That's the approach, just to go out and win the game."
