  • Man City are considering Bayern Munich’s Vincent Kompany as a replacement for Pep Guardiola
  • Bayern CEO confident about the Belgian manager’s future with the German treble hopefuls
  • Kompany’s contract at the Allianz Arena is valid till June 2029.

Manchester City head coach Pep Guardiola is being heavily linked with an upcoming departure from the Etihad Stadium, as the ongoing campaign nears its end.

The Catalan manager is a couple of months away from entering the last year of his current contract at Manchester City. While contracted until the summer of 2027, doubts over Guardiola’s future at the English club have surfaced with the confirmed upcoming departures of Bernardo Silva and John Stones.

Bayern Munich boss Vincent Kompany has emerged as one of Guardiola’s potential successors at the Etihad Stadium, with several reports suggesting that the former Belgium international could make a return to his former club in a managerial role in the future.

Bayern Munich under Vincent Kompany’s leadership

Kompany arrived at Bayern Munich on a three-year deal in May 2024, following a two-season tenure at Burnley. The Belgian made an impressive start to his journey at the German club, winning both of his debut matches in DFB Pokal and the Bundesliga.

He led his squad to the Bundesliga title in his maiden season at Allianz Arena. Having also won the German league this term, Kompany is aiming to win the treble in his second year as well as Bayern’s seventh UEFA Champions League title.

Kompany’s impressive stint in Germany has made him a prominent managerial prospect for several clubs and the former centre-back ranks high on Manchester City’s list of replacements for Guardiola.

Bayern Munich CEO ‘certain’ of Kompany’s future at the club

In conversation with CF Bayern Insider, journalist Christian Falk recently confirmed Manchester City’s interest in their former Premier League winning captain.

“Now, he’s doing such a brilliant job so it’s no surprise that the Belgian’s old club, Manchester City, still have him on the list for when Pep Guardiola heads off,” Falk said.

Falk mentioned that while there is ‘still a bit of fear’ that the 40-year-old might consider City’s approach, if it comes, Bayern Munich CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen has expressed confidence that Kompany will be with the Bavarians for “the foreseeable future”.

“There’s still a bit of fear in the club that if he’s winning everything, Man City will try to persuade him to trade Munich for Manchester,” Falk added.

“However, I was talking with the CEO of Bayern Munich, Jan-Christian Dreesen, and he said there was no chance of Kompany leaving this summer. He’s 100 percent certain that the former Burnley boss will stay for the foreseeable future.”

Kompany signed a contract extension in October last year that will keep him at the Bundesliga club until the summer of 2029. Addressing his new deal at Bayern Munich, Falk expressed that the manager’s decision to extend his stay at the club reflects his long-term plans with the Bavarians, and said,

The journalist said: “If Vincent Kompany signs a contract, it means he’s thought about his future long and hard so Bayern Munich won’t sanction his exit.

“In the meantime, they hope Kompany doesn’t have any plans to leave the club, as if he ends up winning everything, there’s an argument to be made that he’s the best coach in Europe.”

While being Guardiola’s successor and managing Manchester City’s star-studded squad is an enticing offer, Kompany has a chance of building a legacy at Bayern Munich, already having a great chance of winning the third treble in the German club’s history.

How Manchester City would have to pay to appoint Vincent Kompany as Pep Guardiola’s replacement

Along with Kompany, former Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has been widely reported to be among Manchester City’s top choices for their new head coach – when Guardiola decides to call it a day at the Etihad Stadium.
