Kerr scores twice as Chelsea record win at Everton

Sam Kerr scored a brace as Chelsea recorded a 4-1 win over Everton at Goodison Park this afternoon.

The forward netted in each half for The Blues while Ellie Carpenter and Erin Cuthbert also added their names to the scoresheet on Merseyside.

Everton were bidding to do the double over Chelsea after their shock 1-0 win in the reverse fixture back in December. However, Sam Kerr put the visitors in the lead after only six minutes. Cuthbert threaded the ball perfectly to Kerr, who then managed to slot it past Courtney Brosnan.

Carpenter then tried to find Sjoeke Nüsken as Chelsea searched for a second goal, but she couldn’t quite produce the finish at the near post.

Yuka Momiki equalised for the hosts in the 10th minute. She found herself in an empty space inside the Chelsea half and her effort went straight over Hannah Hampton and into the corner of the net.

Brosnan made a huge save to deny Nüsken from putting Chelsea back ahead before Niamh Charles sent the ball into the bottom corner of the net, but the flag went up for offside.

Keira Walsh and Alyssa Thompson then had attempts on goal, but neither could beat Brosnan.

At the other end, Maz Pacheco timed her run to the back post perfectly and found Toni Payne, who unfortunately sent the ball wide.

Just after the break, it was Kerr once again who put The Blues back in front. Lauren James drifted in from the wing and passed to Kerr, who slid the ball beyond Brosnan in an almost symmetrical goal.

Kerr was on the hunt for a hat-trick and she was close to claiming one, but her header was cleared off the line by Martina Fernández.

Ellie Carpenter then scored Chelsea’s third goal. Kerr was once again involved in the play as she passed the ball to Thompson, who then squared it to Carpenter to sweep it home from inside the six-yard box.

Captain Cuthbert then rounded-off the scoring by smashing a half-volley straight past Brosnan.

Chelsea move to within six points of Barclays Women’s Super League leaders Manchester City while Everton now look likely to end the season in the bottom half of the table.
