Bim Pepple has said he was always confident he could make an impact at Plymouth Argyle after his two goals kept the Pilgrims in the League One play-off race.
Pepple's double helped 10-man Argyle beat Port Vale 2-1 at Home Park to give them a chance of making the top six.
The Pilgrims have to beat relegated Northampton Town next week and hope both Stevenage and Luton Town fail to win if they are to reach the play-offs.
The striker – who was called up to the Canada squad for the first time last month – has scored 18 goals this season, 15 of which have come since the turn of the year after a difficult start to his time at the club.
"I scored goals last season – I scored 16 across two loan spells, so I know I could score goals," he said after the win.
"It's about getting up to this level, the highest level I've played so far, a bit of an adjustment period and just working hard every day.
"I knew I had it in me, it's just about showing it as well, and the people supporting me in the background, so it's a mix of all things, but I'm happy."
Pepple has been part of an impressive strike force for Argyle this season, with top scorer Lorent Tolaj netting 20 goals for the Pilgrims and Owen Oseni scoring 10.
"It was an outstanding performance," Argyle head coach Tom Cleverley said after the game.
"The pair of them, to be such a threat when we're down to 10 men is credit to the both of them, but Bim's finishing off both feet is a huge super strength of his.
"He's put so much work into getting to this stage, he deserves every bit of success he's getting.
"We're lucky to have two, plus Owen Oseni who's got the double figures himself, so three strikers that are such goal threats.
"His character, his determination to turn his season into a successful one, and then we're here to facilitate that improvement as well."
Pepple says his target is to score 20 goals in his first season since moving to Home Park from Luton Town for an undisclosed fee.
His goals since January have been a major factor in Argyle's run up League One – they were bottom of the table in November but have been beaten just four times in the third tier since the end of December.
"I think around January time if you told us that the last game of season we can still make the play-offs people would have been like 'you're crazy'," Pepple said.
"But we're not satisfied with getting this far, we want to get into the play-offs – it's not in our hands but we're going to control what we can control.
"The worst thing is you go to Northampton, the other teams drop points and you lose.
"But even if we don't get in we just want to put on a show, that's what the gaffer said to us 'put on a show for the fans'.
"It shows how far we've come, we go a man down, we concede a goal and we still get through it, so it's special."
