Arsenal secured a vital win in their quest to win the Premier League title, defeating Newcastle 1-0 at the Emirates Stadium in a tight encounter.
Arsenal returned to the top of the Premier League table with a tight 1-0 win over Newcastle United at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday evening.
Eberechi Eze scored the only goal of the game, Arsenal’s 100th in the Premier League against the Magpies, striking superbly from outside the box to win all three points for Mikel Arteta’s side.
In what was a game low in scoring opportunities, Arsenal did enough to overtake Manchester City and keep up their hopes for a first Premier League title in 22 years.
The Gunners took the lead after just nine minutes via Eze’s sumptuous strike. After a short corner, Kai Havertz found the England international on the edge of the box, and Eze struck a powerful strike beyond Nick Pope, who stood no chance with the ball curling away from his outstretched hand.
It was the 17th Premier League goal that Arsenal have scored from a corner in 2025-26, breaking the seasonal record by a single club in the competition. It also meant that have gone 1-0 ahead in games on 10 occasions this season following a goal from a corner, another Premier League record in a single campaign.
The home side suffered injuries to both goalscorer (Eze) and assister (Havertz) later in the game, and Arteta will hope that they will be able to return to play a role in the run-in.
Newcastle offered very little in their attempts to find an equaliser, and their thoroughly disappointing league campaign carries on. They are closer to the relegation zone (eight points) than they are a top-five finish (16 points), as the pressure mounts on Eddie Howe.
This was their 14th successive trip to the Emirates Stadium without a win in the Premier League, winning just one point in that run (D1 L13).
Despite collecting all three points in this match, this is a Premier League title race that could easily go down to goal difference, or even goals scored, and the lack of attacking intent by Arsenal once again in this match continues to be a concern.
They attempted 11 shots but accumulated an expected goals total of just 0.64 versus the Magpies – their second lowest xG in a Premier League home game this season. Yes, it was a win but wins alone in this astonishingly tight title battle might not be enough.
