Jones is worth a new deal

But the time is right for Jones to prove that he is worth a new contract and can be entrusted with a starting role. Having last renewed his contract when he was a bit-part player under Jurgen Klopp Jones is due a new deal.

His current contract expires in 2027 – and unless a new agreement is quickly worked out then we could see Jones sold in summer 2026.

Inter Milan came forward with interest in January but a deal fell down. Tottenham and Aston Villa have been linked in recent weeks meanwhile as Premier League sides show their hand.

Manchester City are also sniffing around as revealed by Anfield Watch.

There is no doubt that Richard Hughes would welcome some decent transfer income banked in a deal for Jones. Given his age, quality and experience the club should be optimistic of getting up to £40m for the playmaker even with one year on his deal.

Jones not easily replaced

It would all go in the books as “pure profit” but the risks of an outgoing transfer arguably outweigh the benefits. Jones will open up yet another homegrown slot in the Liverpool squad – places they are now struggling to fill.

And he also possesses a shared identity with the match-going fans on Merseyside being a born-and-bred Scouser. That kind of affinity doesn’t come easily – nor can it be readily bought.

And besides Jones is a top performer.

Liverpool don’t really have another player of his profile – capable of probing, recycling possession and allowing the team to progress higher up the field. Hughes – and Slot – would be doing Jones a disservice in letting him go.

first team.
