Franco Mastantuono has faded from prominence at Real Madrid. The young Argentine arrived at the club last summer surrounded by huge expectations, backed by his breakout performances at River Plate.
Eight months later, that version of the player is still nowhere to be seen. More concerningly, his role in the team has steadily diminished to the point of becoming almost marginal.
Loan exit for Mastantuono?
As such, MARCA reports that Real Madrid are seriously considering a scenario wherein Mastantuono leaves the club on loan to gain experience and return as a better player.
Nobody at the club doubts Mastantuono’s talent, but the idea is beginning to take shape: the need for an intermediate step in a less demanding environment, away from constant scrutiny, where he can develop with regular minutes.
This is not something new at Real Madrid. Endrick also went through a similar situation in his first season at the club, and was eventually loaned out to Lyon this January, where he has flourished.
As such, a similar route with Mastantuono could be explored, although the final decision will be his: stay and fight for a place, or leave to grow.

At 18 years of age, inconsistency is natural, but Mastantuono’s season has fallen well below expectations: 30 matches, three goals and one assist. His impact has been as intermittent as his presence on the pitch.
Over the past two months, he has not accumulated even 90 minutes across all competitions. In the Champions League knockout ties against Manchester City and Bayern Munich, he played only 15 minutes.
Even the inconsistent form of some of his competitors and injuries have not opened the door for him in Alvaro Arbeloa’s team.
Against Alaves last night, where he played more minutes than usual, his performance reflected his current situation. He did not register a shot on target, assist, key pass, successful dribble or notable contribution.
Lacking in game time and confidence, a loan move could benefit Mastantuono next season.
