Liverpool fans were treated to two pieces of contract news on Monday.

Stopping in the mixed zone following the first-ever Merseyside derby at the Hill Dickinson Stadium both Ibrahima Konate and Dominik Szoboszlai spoke out on their respective futures.

Konate, 26, now appears certain to clinch a new contract with his previous deal due to expire in summer 2026. The Frenchman has been involved in protracted contract talks with the club for well over a year but there is finally white smoke over Anfield.

Szoboszlai future in doubt

The 25-year-old signed for the Reds back in 2023 on a £60m deal from RB Leipzig. Having initially struggled to carve out an identity in the lineup Szoboszlai has finally become one of the main men for the Premier League champions.

The Hungarian has gone from strength to strength – stepping up as a leader this season under Arne Slot in very difficult circumstances.

And with a deal that runs until 2028 these are crucial times for Liverpool negotiators in tying the playmaker down for the long term.

Szoboszlai will be well aware of his worth in the market – with midfielders at rival clubs making far more than his reported £150k per week salary.

He is entitled to ask Liverpool to meet his demands – secure in the knowledge that Real Madrid and potentially other leading European teams will offer him a home should his contract run down.

Given his age – and his quality – Szobsozlai holds all the cards right now and he knows it.

Szoboszlai borrows Salah's contract playbook

He has been taking notes from Mohamed Salah – following the same kind of playbook the Egyptian King took before his renewal was announced in 2025.

“There has been no real progression, so I cannot say anything new about my contract situation,” the Hungary captain said on Sunday as per The Athletic.

“We have a lot of games to go and I am focusing on that. As you guys know, my contract ends in 2028, so I am ready to go every day, every week, and then let’s see.

“Of course I see myself here in the long term, but it is not really in my hands any more. I love being here. I love the fans. My family is happy.

“I’m completely relaxed. We have five games to go. Then I am going to rest — a big one, after my international break. Then we will see.”

Szoboszlai wants up to £300k per week

It doesn't take a genius to figure out that "not in my hands” were precisely the words used by Salah while his previous deal was running down.

Liverpool would dearly love to get Szoboszlai on a new deal – following in the footsteps of Ryan Gravenberch who renewed a few weeks ago.

It won’t come cheap – with the Dutchman reportedly jumping to around £277k per week as part of his new deal. Szoboszlai will be looking to match – or even beat that total – with recent estimates suggesting he wanted between £250k and £300k per week.

If the midfielder is relaxed, it’s no wonder. Because he is going to get weighed in on his new deal whether it’s at Liverpool or elsewhere.
