Former Peterborough United, Barnet and Luton Town manager John Still has been appointed as head of football by non-league Chelmsford City.

The 75-year-old recently left a similar role at Southend United as part of a major restructure of the National League club.

Chelmsford are 10th in National League South, having recently parted company with manager Angelo Harrop, and cannot reach the play-offs with only one game left to play this season.

"John is a name that commands enormous respect across the game. With decades of experience, multiple promotions, and a proven track record of building successful teams, his appointment represents a major step forward for this football club," said owner/chairman Spencer Gore.

"This is not just a hire – it is a statement of intent. As we continue to build a club that is ready to compete at the next level, strengthening our recruitment structure is critical."

Gore bought a majority stake in the club in 2024 and set a goal of reaching the English Football League but they have not yet been able to take the step up to the top tier of non-league football.

They did, however, reach the second round of this season's FA Cup before losing at home to Weston-super-Mare.

"We are building a football club with real ambition, real structure, and real belief. A club that is not just thinking about the next game, but the next level," Gore added.

"John will play a key role in shaping the future of our squad, identifying talent, and helping us create a team capable of delivering sustained success.

"We are not here to stand still. We are here to build."
