FC Barcelona midfielder and one of the club captains, Frenkie de Jong, could soon surpass the record for most official appearances by a Dutch player for the club, currently held by Phillip Cocu with 292 matches.

And, in an interview with the club media (h/t Mundo Deportivo), Cocu, who was a key figure at Barcelona between the late 1990s and early 2000s, emphasised the significance of the milestone and acknowledged the merit of De Jong.

“I love his playing style, but also the kind of person he is. He has a perfect profile for Barça, and he also stands out for his character and personality,” said Cocu.

“He’s very professional and humble. There always comes a time when someone equals your record, and if it’s Frenkie, he deserves it,” he added.

In his analysis of De Jong’s performances, Cocu highlighted his impact on the team’s play, particularly after overcoming a difficult period affected by injuries.

“In recent months he has recovered his best form and his value on the field is clearly visible… Perhaps he doesn’t stand out for goals, but his influence on the team’s play is fundamental, especially when you want to dominate matches,” he said.

The former Netherlands international also reflected on what it meant to hold that record for many years at a club where other notable Dutch players have played, such as Ronald Koeman and Patrick Kluivert.

“It’s a huge source of pride, because there have been so many great Dutch players at Barça. Having played the most games is something very special for me,” he said.

“Representing a club like Barça is never just a normal thing; it’s a privilege. I felt that way when I played there, and I still feel that way now.”

Finally, Cocu also gave an overall assessment of Barcelona’s season and the work of coach Hansi Flick, saying:

“For me, it’s been a great season. Hansi’s style of play, with a lot of pressure, intensity, and directness, is very attractive. They had some bad luck in the Champions League, because in the final stages the difference between teams is minimal.

“Beyond that, I really like that he’s giving opportunities to academy players, combining them with big signings. That’s Barça. He’s managed to combine that identity with an intense and direct style of play. I love watching the team’s matches. Barça is Barça.”
