The debate around Robert Lewandowski’s future at Barcelona is intensifying, with growing scrutiny not only in Spain but also in Poland, where the striker’s situation is being followed closely.

Once the undisputed focal point of Barcelona’s attack, Lewandowski now finds himself in a very different position.

The veteran forward has gradually slipped down the pecking order under Hansi Flick, raising serious questions about his long-term role in the squad despite ongoing talks over a possible contract extension.

Adding fuel to the discussion, Polish football icon Zbigniew Boniek has delivered a frank assessment of Lewandowski’s current standing.

What Boniek said

Speaking publicly, Boniek did not shy away from addressing what many observers have already begun to notice – Lewandowski is no longer guaranteed a starting place in Barcelona’s strongest XI.

Explaining his view, Boniek pointed to recent team selections and the level of competition within the squad.

“We have to say it clearly, and Robert shouldn’t be ashamed or offended by this: Lewandowski is a substitute at Barcelona today if all the players are available to manager Hansi Flick.

“And that’s even though Raphinha hasn’t even returned yet.

“So in such an important match, a Robert Lewandowski in peak form isn’t starting on the pitch from the first minute! That means something,” he said.

More advice for Lewandowski

Boniek also touched on what lies ahead for Lewandowski.

While he believes the striker still has more to offer, he acknowledged that continuing at Barcelona may not be straightforward given the intensity of competition and the club’s current direction.

“Of course, it would be a shame if this were Robert’s last Champions League match.

“It’s clear that Robert has some decisions to make. I saw Ferran Torres, who started from the first minute in such an important match, and that means something.

“We’ll see what happens, but at Barça he already knows what goals he can aim for,” he said.

As far as the player is concerned, he recently said that he is in no rush to make a decision and that he has already communicated his desires and demands with Barcelona.
