In what is a stunning move, Inter Miami CF have announced that head coach Javier Mascherano has resigned from his role. “I want to let everyone know that, for personal reasons, I have decided to end my tenure as head coach of Inter Miami CF,” Mascherano said in a club statement. “First and foremost, I would like to thank the Club for the trust they placed in me, every employee who is part of the organization for the collective effort, but especially the players, who made it possible for us to experience unforgettable moments.”

Mascherano leaves the club with a 1.93 points-per-game average, the highest among all managers in club history. The move also comes just months after Mascherano led Inter Miami CF to their first-ever MLS Cup title. The Herons beat the Vancouver Whitecaps 3-1 at Chase Stadium to lift the club’s first-ever league title in December. This season, Inter Miami have been off to a mediocre start, sitting third in the Eastern Conference with 12 points from seven games. The club was also eliminated from the Concacaf Champions Cup by league competitor Nashville SC (0-0 & 1-1 on aggregate). Although the results haven’t been great, the results on their own don’t seem to justify Mascherano’s departure.
“Javier will forever be part of this Club’s history and will always hold a special place in the Inter Miami CF family,” managing owner Jorge Mas said in a club statement. “Not only for being a key part of unforgettable achievements, such as winning the MLS Cup and the team’s historic performance at the Club World Cup, but also for the example he set through his dedication and daily work leading the team. We respect his decision and are deeply grateful for everything he contributed, wishing him nothing but the very best in his professional and personal future.”

Javier Mascherano departs – Guillermo Hoyos takes over for now
For now, assistant coach Guillermo Hoyos will assume the role as first team head coach at Inter Miami. Mascherano’s sporting director role will be taken over by Alberto Marrero. Either way, the departure leaves a significant gap at Inter Miami, who recently opened their brand-new Nu Stadium. With the new stadium in place, and ambitious signings, Miami were hopeful to build on last season’s success with Mascherano leading the charge. Instead, the club will be conducting a coaching search just seven games into the new season.
