With Real Madrid seeking reinforcements in the centre-back department in the summer transfer window, Borussia Dortmund star Nico Schlotterbeck had emerged as a key target.

The German international’s profile appealed to Los Blancos, while the fact that his contract with the Bundesliga giants stood to expire in 2027 made him an even more enticing target.

For a while, it even seemed like a move could be possible as renewal talks between the player and Dortmund were not progressing.

However, the situation had taken a U-turn in recent weeks, and Real Madrid have now been greeted by some bad news with regard to their pursuit of Schlotterbeck.

Renewal agreed

Indeed, Schlotterbeck has reached an agreement with Borussia Dortmund over a new long-term contract, the club have announced officially.

“Borussia Dortmund has extended its contract with Nico Schlotterbeck (26) until 2031. The German international signed his new contract this Friday,” the statement reads.

The 26-year-old centre-back will extend his partnership with the Black and Yellows until the summer of 2031. Furthermore, he is set to become one of the best paid players at the club.

Despite attracting interest from Real Madrid and several other clubs across Europe, Schlotterbeck has decided to renew and prolong his stay at Signal Iduna Park.

It goes without saying that this comes as a blow for Real Madrid, who seem to be fast running out of their preferred targets in the centre-back market.

Dayot Upamecano has already extended with Bayern Munich and Ibrahima Konate is on the verge of signing a new contract at Liverpool.

Marc Guehi, a former target, signed for Manchester City from Crystal Palace in the January transfer window itself. Now, Schlotterbeck, too, is committing to a new contract to Borussia Dortmund.

Given the situation, it will be interesting to see who Real Madrid target to shore up their defensive ranks in the summer.
