'Dotting I's and crossing T's' on new deal – Evans

Bristol Rovers manager Steve Evans said the club are "dotting the I's and crossing the T's" over his new contract.

Evans has steered the club to League Two safety since his appointment in December, with their position in the league confirmed for next season following two wins over the Easter weekend.

The 63-year-old initially agreed to join until the end of this season with the club on a 10-game losing run and in the relegation zone.

"My people that look after me are just finalising one or two things, with Ritchie Bates, our chief executive, on behalf of the board," Evans told BBC Points West.

"The meetings have gone as good as I could have hoped they would have gone. But as you know, whether you're a player, young or old, whether you're a manager, head coach, until you sign the contract, you've never completed that activity."

Evans said three weeks ago he had spoken with chairman Hussain AlSaeed and that a new deal was looking "more likely” following the conversation.

Yet speaking prior to their game against his former club Crawley Town on Saturday, he added that AlSaeed was still seeking clarity over "one or two" issues.

"I've given them a plan," Evans said. "I've presented options on styles, I've presented options on players we would like to bring in, I've presented the decisions we've made on the current squad.

"So far, so good, because the chairman has ticked every box, not some of those boxes. But there's one or two things he wanted to specifically check on and as a leader he has the option to do so."

The Gas are 15th in the table having picked up 35 points during Evans' tenure, including 11 wins, while they go into Saturday's match as the in-form team in the league, having won their past five games.

Since their first win under Evans on 1 January, their form would also put them seventh in the table – level on points with Crewe Alexandra, Grimsby Town and Oldham Athletic, who are all currently above them.
