The idea comes from growing concerns over how difficult it has become for young talents to break into first teams. As a result, the group is exploring the creation of a U21 league, designed to help players gain meaningful experience before stepping up to the Bundesliga.
The shortcomings of the current system include:
🔸 Only 9 German academies rank among the 100 most productive in Europe;
🔸 The Bundesliga has the fewest homegrown players among Europe’s top five leagues;
🔸 85% of minutes played in the Bundesliga are by non-academy signings.
